All interns are expected to spend 11 weeks in the program. Occasional exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
High school students rarely have enough college-level science classes, laboratory experience, or relationships with faculty to obtain strong recommendations to be competitive in the intern selection process. As a consequence, we limit our program to college undergraduates.
The Gates Summer Internship Program is open to international students who possess an F1 visa.In addition to the applicant’s visa status, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) approval is often required from their college or university upon acceptance. Please familiarize yourself with your institution’s CPT policy.
International applicants should note that their stipend will be subject to a 14% federal tax, which must be deducted upfront. We will share information on additional requirements for accepted applicants.
All students enrolled in a U.S. undergraduate program at the onset of the application period (12/1/23) are eligible to apply.

No, applicants may submit an unofficial copy of their academic transcript with their application. Upon acceptance an official transcript may be requested.
All applicants should be notified of their status by the end of March.
Interns will be asked to indicate their research preferences following their acceptance to the program. Mentor/lab assignments will be made according to those preferences, mentor availability, and other logistical considerations.
Yes, GSIP interns, traveling from out of state, will receive up to $500 in travel assistance for relocation to and from Denver.
GSIP cannot provide housing, but we offer a generous stipend to offset housing costs. We have a relationship with our sister campus’ dormitory, Lynx Crossing. It is located in downtown Denver and has summer dormitory space available for rent.
Other housing options can be explored on Airbnb, Rotating Room, Zillow, and Trulia. Class of 2023 Interns are encouraged to explore co-housing options with accepted classmates via a our GSIP GroupMe chat.
