All interns are expected to spend 11 weeks in the program. Occasional exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

High school students rarely have enough college-level science classes, laboratory experience, or relationships with faculty to obtain strong recommendations to be competitive in the intern selection process. As a consequence, we limit our program to college undergraduates. 

We encourage interested high school students to consider other CU Anschutz High School Programs or CU Science Discovery. After completing a year or more of college or university courses, we welcome your application!

The Gates Summer Internship Program is open to international students who possess an F1 visa.Curricular Practical Training (CPT) approval is required from their college or university upon acceptance. Please familiarize yourself with your institution’s CPT policy.

Interns must also possess a US bank account for direct deposit of their stipend.

International applicants should note that their stipend will be subject to a 14% federal tax, which must be deducted upfront.

All students enrolled in a U.S. undergraduate program at the onset of the application period (12/1/25) are eligible to apply.

Yes, former GSIP interns and applicants are welcome to apply.

Generally, applicants with research experience will be more competitive in the selection process, however applicants without access to research opportunities will be taken into consideration.

No, applicants may submit an unofficial copy of their academic transcript with their application. Upon acceptance an official transcript may be requested.

All applicants should be notified of their status by the end of March.

Interns will be asked to indicate their research preferences following their acceptance to the program. Mentor/lab assignments will be made according to those preferences, mentor availability, and other logistical considerations.

We recognize that each of our students will have their own transportation costs and have increased our stipend in an effort to help cover them.

GSIP cannot provide housing, but we offer a stipend to offset housing costs.

Housing options can be explored on MySweetRentals, Airbnb, Rotating Room, Zillow, and Trulia. Class of 2026 Interns are encouraged to explore co-housing options with accepted classmates via our GSIP group chat.
